Indian tourist visa by mail from Chicago?
My friend and I are going to India in October/November, and I'm trying to sort out our visas. Here's the progress so far.
We live in Wisconsin, so must apply via the Indian consulate in Chicago. Their website does not have a downloadable application form; they recommend going to the website for the consulate in New York to download the form. I have done that. The problem is that some of the language implies that the form is to be used by applicants who live in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, etc.
The Chicago consulate's website also says you can get the application form if you e-mail, fax, phone, or write them. I 've e-mailed twice and faxed once, with no reply. This morning, I phoned (three times) and finally got through to someone who said I can in fact use the form from the New York consulate's site.
I downloaded the form, and now I have another question. I would like to apply for a multiple-entry visa, but there is nowhere to indicate this on the form. It asks for type of visa (Tourist, Business, Student, etc.) and then period of visa (six months, one year, etc.) but nothing further.
So, I'm looking for two things:
1) Confirmation from someone who has used the form from the New York website to apply for an Indian tourist visa from an Indian consulate in another city -- in other words, will this really work, or will they kick the paperwork back to me, keep the application fee, and make me start from scratch? All I have to back me is "Someone told me on the phone..."
2) Suggestions as to how I get a multiple-entry visa. Write it in the margin? Send an accompanying letter?
I'd be grateful for any guidance at this point. I have to say that the LP guide offers surprisingly little information on how to negotiate the process.
I don't mean to sound whiny, and I know this process is just getting the tip of my toes wet when it comes to dealing with the types bureaucracy I may face at various points in the trip; I'm prepared for that. I'm just hoping to benefit from any knowledge and experience anyone here is willing to share, to keep myself from making some bozo mistake right out of the starting gate.
Thanks in advance!
